ps2: cheep ($99!) over 2000 games plays ps1 games
ps3: $300, free online (if you have broadband) plays ps1 games NOT ps2 games

ps2, better value for gameing, ps3 better for moives and (rather cheep) tv shows.

good luck!

there aren’t many kids games for ps3 and most require an internet connection either to play or to get game or firmware updates and the games are $60 or so , I’d recommend a ps2 or wii for kids , more games , cheaper and no internet required for most .

If you are getting it to play movies, then just buy them a cheap dvd player. If you are getting it for a poor family ot game, hmm. The PS2 was a great console and it has a lot fo game titles, however the PS3 is the better system that has a greater range of uses. It is an internet appliance, cd player, dvd player, obviously games, it can also be used for computing when linux is added to it. It is upgradeable and online gaming is free (well, someone has to pay for the internet, but the gaming is free).

Now, define wholesome. Every gaming system out there will let you play as “less than wholesome characters” or take part in murder, rape, crimes against humanity or alien creatures. If that is a deal breaker, spend your money elsewhere.

This is a hard question to answer, based on what you are trying to do, so I will give you the pros and cons of both.

PS2
Pros:
Has a whole lot more kid friendly games compared to the PS3
Internet is an after thought, and is not required for any games
The PS2 game library is huge, compared to the current PS3 game library
A lot of popular games are still made for both PS2 and PS3 (example: Madden 2010)
Can play PS1 games
Cons:
The Internet for the PS2 is considered stone age
There is additional equipment required if Internet is wanted
Can not be used as a “computer” if Internet is connected

PS3
Pros:
The graphics are way above the PS2 graphics
You can get Internet on the PS3 without buying any additional equipment
Online play is free (existing Internet required)
Can play all disc types (Blu-ray, DVD, CD)
Can play PS1 games
Can be used as a somewhat limited “computer”
Can store and access photos, music, and videos
Cons:
Needs software updates for some games to play properly, which requires Internet access
Current models can not play PS2 games
A few games are Internet Only (online only) games
Few school age games compared to the PS2

These are some of the things I can think of. Hopefully these will help you make a more informed decision. I personally say the PS3 is the better device, but the cost of the device, along with the cost of the accessories and games is higher than that of a PS2, but you get a better and more up to date product as well.

Only you can decide what device is a better fit for the situation. I can say, for under privileged children, they will be more happy with a PS3 than with a PS2. But when you have nothing, even a PS2 is better than nothing.

If the kids are under 10, then get a PS2, but if 10+ then get them a PS3….by the way, a game that all kids like is LittleBigPlanet. Its a PS3 game that my little 10 year old sister and 9 year old brother are addicted to. They play it non stop. That game alone would be the reason to get the PS3.

I say just get them the PS3 and littleBIgPlanet, the PS2 may have more games, but they aren’t going to be able to afford all of them and by the way, PS3 games are better.

Here is a review of LittleBigPlanet:
