On the Sony PlayStation 3, ther is a thing called the Yellow Light of Death, which is like the “brother” of the Red Ring of Death on the Xbox 360. I want to know if there is a way to prevent this “Yellow Light of Death,” and is there a cooling stand/station for the Sony PlayStation 3?
The YLOD, like the more common RROD is an overheating problem.
Here are some ways:
-make sure it has plenty of breathing room, so it won’t become too hot
-horizontal placement of the PS3 allows for better cooling, see the link below
-after every 4 or 5 hours, take a half hour break from the PS3. turn it off; don’t leave it running
You shouldn’t use an aftermarket cooler for the PS3, as most will void your warranty because
1) They add an extra jolt of electricity running from the AC outlet to the PS3
2) Some coolers spin in the opposite direction of the PS3 stock coolers, which can cause them to break
Also, the PS3 only has a failure rate of 0.2% (note the decimal), so you have a very very very very very very very very very low chance of your PS3 ever breaking. Even if it does, then as long as it is in warranty Sony will repair it for free. If it is out of warranty (one year) then you will have to pay $150 for the repairs.
that is a good answer but I disagree about horizontal placement. Most of the heated air is blown out the right side of the ps3, if it’s set upright it becomes the top side and the heat escapes naturally so the system fan doesn’t have to work as hard. Also where’s the link…
But whether you set the ps3 flat or upright, the important thing is to use it at room temperature because that’s what it was designed and tested for, leave 4 inches of space around it on all sides, and don’t put it on top of any other heat-generating device. One thing that is usually neglected is using a dust cover, dust will kill any pc or console eventually by trapping heat inside. Some ps3’s ship with ungrounded power cords, if yours did, replace it with a grounded pc power cord. Use a surge protector if one is available.
i just want to point out that the YLOD can also be a HDD reading error that is starting to occur now among the 60/20 gb models. and reformatting the HDD can fix aswell as doing a ps3 system restore.
recovering your data is kind of hard if you have say a game file you want to keep, you would have to put it on your pc by actually hooking up the HDD to your pc.
